Shockwave therapy (also called Pressure Wave Therapy) is a non-invasive, highly effective treatment method for pain that promotes accelerated repair of injured soft tissue, bone, heel and joint pain.
What is Shockwave Therapy?
Shockwave therapy, also called Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Technology (EPAT), is a modern treatment whereby high-energy sound waves are introduced into painful areas of the body. These high-energy sound waves accelerate healing by stimulating cellular metabolism and enhancing blood circulation to regenerate damaged tissue. It is one of the most advanced, non-invasive treatment methods cleared by the FDA.

What area of the body can be treated?
Shockwave therapy can successfully address acute and chronic pain such as:

- Foot, Heel, Ankle Pain including Shin Splits & Ankle Sprains
- Achilles Tendonitis
- Knee Pain including Patella Tendonitis & Osgood-Schlatter’s
- Hamstring Pain
- Back Pain
- Neck Pain
- Tendon Pain & Bursitis
- Shoulder, Elbow, and Wrist Pain including Tennis Elbow

- Scar Tissue & Myofascial Trigger Points
Treatment and Benefits
Shockwave therapy is noninvasive. First a gel is applied to the treatment area and then pressure waves are released through the applicator as it is moved over the treatment area. One treatment usually lasts 3-5 minutes and most people feel significant relief after 2-3 treatments. Shockwave therapy accelerates healing by using your body’s existing and natural healing agents such as red blood cells, growth factors and stem cells.

BTF and Shockwave Therapy
Back to Function is one of the few healthcare facilities that offers Shockwave therapy. Our shockwave machine was manufactured in Switzerland by Storz Medical and has no equal as far as safety and effectiveness. Most people are good candidates for shockwave therapy, however patients who are pregnant, have a pacemaker or current cancer are not suitable for treatment. Patents can return to work/sport after treatments and in most cases there is no downtime.
At Back to Function we have experienced staff that can answer your questions and make an appointment for you to come in for a consultation by calling 310-534-1900 or email at [email protected].
