COVID-19 Vaccines

As a healthcare professional, some of my patients are interested in my opinion regarding the COVID-19 💉. Here is my simple synopsis of what I know about these 💉 and how they operate in the body. Keep in mind that the immune system is very complex and detailed study is required to become a true expert in immunology.

Typically, our immune system has non-specific antibodies floating around in our body. When we are exposed to an intruder (virus, bacteria), these non-specific antibodies are activated and they go on the attack to eliminate the intruder. Sometimes the antibody attack in our body is a violent one and we get side effects like a rise in our body temperature (fever) and mucus production (cough, runny nose). But these side effects are the result of our antibodies typically winning the fight against the intruding 🦠.

When we get injected with a COVID-19 💉, that is giving us specific antibodies that will recognize and attack the SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2). SARS-CoV-2 uses a spike protein to bind to a receptor in order to enter human host cells. Most of the current 💉 work by introducing the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein into our body, so that the production of antibodies and immunity against SARS-CoV-2 are stimulated. It is important to be mindful that these COVID-19 💉Β  have been authorized for emergency use during the pandemic by the United States Food & Drug Administration and are still in the experimental stage. According to early data gathered by the pharmaceutical companies that have created the 💉, they are helping to decrease the spread and symptoms of COVID-19 in the populations that they were able to study. What might be interesting, is how the specific antibodies from the injected 💉 interact with our non-specific antibodies that we have naturally from our acquired immune system.

There is a theory that is being discussed by doctors and researchers (that know a lot more about the immune system and 🦠Β  than I do), that the injected specific antibodies will dominate the non-specific antibodies in the body in future immune system responses. Might this leave us vulnerable to a mutated version of future SARS-CoV? According to researchers Dr. Suzuki and Dr. Gychka in their review paper on how theΒ SARS-CoV-2 spike protein elicits cell signaling in human host cells, we will need to carefully monitor the long-term consequences of COVID-19 vaccines that introduce the spike protein into the human body. While human data on the possible long-term consequences of spike-based COVID-19 vaccines will not be available anytime soon, it is important that appropriate animal models are employed as soon as possible to ensure the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein does not elicit any signs of the pathogenesis of pulmonary arterial hypertension or any other chronic pathological conditions.

Most of us have genetically-gifted immune systems that have been fighting off a multitude of 🦠 our entire lives. It could be a travesty if this quick-to-market COVID-19 💉 stunts a healthy body’s natural immune ability to fend off future would-be viral attackers. In the absence of animal studies on the new 💉, only time will tell how successful the vaccinated individuals will be at fending off future similar viruses.
